Chapter 13

Deep blue and speckled gold locked Whitetail in place. She didn’t understand how someone who wasn’t able to see anything could hold so much emotion within their eyes—emotions like the hope and relief that washed over Gage when she agreed to tell her story.

What was going through his head to make him react like that? She should have meant nothing to him, yet the expression on his face made it hard to deny he really did feel something toward her. That made finding the right words to say difficult.

“I . . .” She paused, noticing movement behind his shoulder, but she kept her attention focused on him. “Maybe you should sit down.”

She helped him to his blanket, where Lavi had curled up to sleep, then started pacing in the small space in front of him. Her eyes remained fixed on her feet as she walked.

“This is about Willowsong.” She hoped to get it all out quickly, but as soon as she said her sister’s name, the rest of her explanation stuck in her throat.

Her eyes flicked to the movement behind Gage again, and she cringed. He said nothing as she silently continued her pacing.

Step, step, turn. Step, step, turn.

Minutes passed, but Whitetail’s vocal chords refused to obey.

“Is it because you were there when the slayers killed her?” he asked.

Whitetail halted, and her head jerked toward him. “You know about that?”

His lips twitched guiltily. “Yeah. I, uh . . . overheard Hayden and Reedwalker talking.”

“You know,” she said again, but this time it came out like a sigh. That made things easier. Vaguely.

She collapsed into a sitting position in front of him and studied his face. Surely he had some sort of reaction over that knowledge.

If he did, he didn’t let her see what it was.

Whitetail looked down at her hands. He needed to know the extent of what had happened. “I wasn’t only there,” she explained. “I was the one who led the slayers to her . . . and I was the one who landed the killing blow.”

“Why would you do that?”

She flinched, but he didn’t sound upset, only curious.

“Because she asked me to.”

Gage didn’t respond. The silence made her nervous enough to glance up. His eyes were wide, and his lips turned down. It was a look of pity and compassion, and it didn’t make any sense. Hayden gave her that look all the time, but she thought if anyone would give a more rational reaction to what she had done, it would be him. Even if he didn’t loathe her as much as Malbaen, he should have at least been a little unsettled by her confession.

“Say something.” She needed to know the thoughts behind his expression.

Gage blinked and then shook his head. “I’m sorry. I can’t imagine how hard that must have been for you.”

“Hard?” Whitetail let out an incredulous laugh at his selfless sympathy. “I told you I willingly killed Willowsong, and you’re worried about me?”

“Should I be mad instead?”

Whitetail plastered her defensive smirk onto her face.
